A walk back in time

Today we made the short journey to Bon Secour for a tour of the historic Swift-Coles tidewater mansion. The lovely old home was decorated for Christmas in, oddly enough, a "Dreaming of a White Christmas" theme.

The 16-room home was built around 1882 as a four room dog trot home. In 1898, the Swift family moved into the home and expanded it to its current 6,000 square feet. The Swift family raised 11 children in this house. There are 10 fireplaces and 3,500 square feet of porches that overlook the grounds.

I felt like I'd been immediately transported to an earlier era as we walked under the massive live oak tree, which was dripping with spanish moss, to the foyer via the front porch. There, we were greeted by a docent -- a gracious and knowledgable Southern lady who briefed us on the history of the home before we began the tour.

The home is now owned by the Baldwin County Historic Development Commission and is used as a museum to showcase this part of Baldwin County's heritage.
